Emily Williams introduced our speaker Sharon Jones , Legal Assistance of Dakota County, LADC was founded in 1972 by the Dakota County Bar Association. Their mission is to provide free legal services to low-income residents of Dakota County, primarily in the area of family law.

 

  • Family law is the area of greatest client demand.
  • Family law offers long-term solutions to problems of financial instability and domestic violence.
  • They help people get out of poverty and reduce or prevent reliance on MFIP, SNAP, RCA, General Assistance, and Emergency Assistance

 

Sharon shared the above view of the Civil Legal Aid & Pro Bono  in the State of Minnesota.

 

Legal Assistance serve over 1200 families each year, through a combination of extended representation, brief services, and advice with a staff of two attorneys, a part-time paralegal, part-time Spanish-speaking intake worker and a part-time legal assistant.

 

To help with their work Legal Assistance has a Volunteer Service.

•125 local volunteer attorneys.
•More than 40 take extended representation cases though our OFP panel or from our divorce waitlist.
•Our volunteers staff our self-help clinics, in partnership with the Dakota County Law Library and 360 Communities.  They offer at least 24 appointments for consumer law and 96 appointments for family law each month.
