Scott Miller introduced our speaker Kaelyn Matteson with Team World Vision. “She runs so others can have clean water.”

More than 2.5 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities. At least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water. Rotary’s projects give communities the ability to develop and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems and support studies related to water and sanitation and like Rotary, World Vision is an non-government provider of clean water in the developing world—reaching one new person with clean water every 30 seconds.

World Vision’s water projects are sustainable, comprehensive and complex. They engage the community, religious leaders, and local government. After rigorous assessment, engineers choose from different types of water points depending on the geography and the needs of a community. Projects also focus on improved sanitation and hygiene solutions like building latrines and organizing communities to implement good habits such as hand washing.

Kaelyn runs 6k’s, 1/2 Marathons, and to celebrate her 26th Birthday a full Marathon. In 2012 after graduating from Eau Claire she ran with 23 people and in 2 year’s her running group has grown to 115 runners.  Kaelyn shared that running for her is a metaphor for life and a joy to do with other people.
